The IRS offers many payment options — if you owe federal tax.

  1. Never send cash. You can pay online, send a check via USPS, pay by phone or with your mobile device.
  2. Use IRS Direct Pay online at IRS.gov. You can pay taxes electronically 24/7.
  3. Whether you e-file your tax return or file on paper, you can choose to pay with a credit card or debit card online or with a check.
  4. You may also enroll in the EFTPS, Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, to pay electronically.
  5. If you can’t pay electronically, pay by a personal, cashier’s check or money order. Do not send cash. Make your check or money order is payable to the U.S. Treasury. Write your name, social security number, tax year and Form number you are filing, address and daytime phone number on the front of your payment.
  6. If you pay by paper check via mail, include Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher.
  7. Remember to include your payment with your tax return if mailing, but do not staple or clip it to any tax form.

If you can not pay your tax in full, you should still file your tax return on time and pay as much as you can with your tax return. That will help keep your penalty and interest costs down.
